Rules and Expectations – Ms. Brown’s 2nd Grade Class

Rules for Student Behavior

Hollis Academy has
a school-wide Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct was explained and discussed
during the first week of school. The Code of Conduct is as follows:

1. (T) I am
responsible for myself, my actions and my choices.

2. (H) I
always come prepared to learn.

3. (I) I will
respect everyone in my school with my speech and actions

4. (N) I will
follow directions politely the first time they are given.

5. (K) I will
keep my hands, feet and all objects to myself.

One major
goal in school is to encourage the development of self-discipline.  A classroom management plan offers guidance
in making good decisions and taking responsibility for one’s actions.  Effective classroom management provides a
safe, nurturing environment for students. 
This fosters academic, emotional, and social growth throughout the year.

The plan I
have established uses a ladder of colors to show the student’s behavior for the
day.  A daily behavior chart is part of
the class newsletter in the student’s folder. 
At the end of the day, the student or I will use the check the appropriate
number of letters for that day.  Parents
will sign the behavior sheet each night to acknowledge their child’s class
behavior.

The rules in
our classroom are:

1.     Be kind and fair to others

2.     Raise your hand when you want to speak

3.     Show respect

4.     Keep our areas clean and tidy

5.     Walk in the classroom and hallway

6.     Try your best

7.     Always do your homework

8.     Tell the truth, no matter what the situation

Our class is
using a number system to track our behaviors throughout the day.  The number chart starts at 1 and ends at
6.  All students begin the day on 3 and
can move clips up for completing homework and good choices throughout the
day.  The students will move their clips
down for infractions of the expectations. 
The students will be able to move up and down throughout the day.

Reinforcements and Consequences

To encourage positive
behavior I will recognize appropriate behavior through verbal praise, smiles,
positive notes, stickers/stamps, candy, computer time, treasure box, and phone
calls home.

If a student
does not make any gains on their ladder, possible consequences are silent
lunch, walking laps at recess, parent conference or referral (depending on
severity of the infractions)

If a child is
involved in any action that endangers or hurts him/her or others (hitting,
kicking, pushing, biting, or pinching) or if a behavior disrupts the class in
such a manner that it makes learning impossible for other students, an office
referral will be written immediately. At that point, the administration will
handle the problem and determine the consequences.

Rewards

Students will
be awarded with PBIS bones for positive behavior throughout the day.  Students accumulate no more than 3 letters
throughout the week will be allowed to visit the treasure box Friday afternoon.  Students will also visit the treasure box if
no homework is missing for the entire week.

Behavior Contract

On occasion,
a student will be given a behavior contract and individual behavior plan. This
plan will be implemented in the case that an inappropriate behavior is
exhibited consistently by the same student. Parents will always be
notified in the event that a behavior contract and plan is to be used with
their child.


PBIS Incentive System

When students
are caught being responsible, respectful, and/or ready in any area listed on
the matrix, they can be given a bone card. Any member of the Hollis staff may
issue a bone card. The issuer should fill in the following information on the
card; issuer’s name, student’s name, and expectation displayed
Once students meet the following benchmarks
they will be awarded prizes. The delivery sheet should only be filled in when
students reach the designated benchmarks.

PBIS bones

Every 10
bones = prize of the week

Every 25
bones = prize of choice on designated prize day

Every 50
bones = prize of choice on designated prize day

Every 70
bones =  prize of choice on designated prize day

Every 100
bones = prize of choice on designated prize day

Bone cards
are cumulative. On Friday, it is the teacher’s responsibility to collect bone
cards, record the names of the students on the delivery sheet to receive a
benchmark prize, and make a copy of the sheet before turning it into the PBIS
mailbox. Teachers should also collect the benchmark bones, and place them into
the PBIS mailbox (EX. When a student has 10 bone cards, turn in all ten and
keep record. When a child receives 25 bone cards, you will only have 15 to turn
in and keep record. When a child receives 50 bone cards, you will only have 25
to turn in and keep record). Remember, bone cards are cumulative. These bone
cards will be used to draw for a teacher issuer winner. The teacher will
receive the prize of a special parking space for the week. All staff
members are asked to give bones to students (any Hollis Academy student)
throughout the day when you see them being responsible, respectful, and ready
in the areas listed on the matrix.

The class
will be working for “Husky Growls.” 
Administrators will give out a husky growl to the classes that they see
are following the school rules.  Classes
all over the school compete to get the most husky growls.  The teacher will turn in the growls when 10
have been earned.  A Hollis husky will be
placed on the hallway display beside the teacher’s name.

Non-Instructional Procedures

Classroom Procedures

Arrival

Students
enter the classroom in an orderly fashion, escorted by the teacher at
7:45.  Students are to hang up their belongings and unpack their backpack;
backpacks should be left in the cubbies.  Students will bring their
homework folder to the back table.  Students should go to their seats and
begin the work that is on their desk.  Instruction will begin promptly at
8:00.   

Sharpening Pencils

Students
should have at least two sharpened pencils at their desk at all times. 
Each table has a caddy with additional sharpened pencils; the student may trade
his/her pencil at any time.  At the end of the day, all of the pencils
that need sharpening should be placed in the “To Be Sharpened” cup by
the sharpener.  

Lunch

Prior to
lunch, students will make their lunch choice.  The lunchroom has 2 hot
lunches and a vegetarian entrée each day.  The first 10 minutes of lunch
is silent lunch for all.  After 10 minutes, student may talk quietly with
their neighbors.  Also after these 10 minutes, students may purchase ice
cream if they are on green for behavior in the classroom. 

Restroom Breaks

Students are
able to use the restroom when needed.  The student will raise his/her hand
and give the signal of two fingers to use the restroom.  The only
exception is when an adult is giving instructions.  Students should turn
the restroom sign to indicate it is occupied and available.  Emergencies
supersede the above.

Water Breaks

Students are
able to get water when needed.  The only exception is when an adult is
giving instructions.  Scheduled water breaks take place after the recess
and related arts.  

Recess

Students play
for 15 minutes a day on the playground, weather permitting.  If weather
prevents the class from going outside, students are invited to participate in a
large group art or musical activity.  They may also choose to read or rest
during this time.

School Assemblies

Students will
be expected to be respectful and attentive during all assemblies. 
Misbehavior will result in loss of privileges and/or punishment, depending on
the severity of the misbehavior.  Rewards will be given for students
demonstrating appropriate behaviors.

Library

Students
visit the library once each week during related arts time on Thursday. 
Students may go to the library with teacher permission and pass during morning
homeroom and ELA times, when the library is open.

Dismissal

After packing
up, students will assist with preparing the room for the next day. 
Students are responsible for straightening the room, sweeping the floor,
sharpening pencils, and stacking chairs.  Students will be delivered
to the appropriate dismissal area by the teacher.

Changes in Address, Phone Numbers, and
Dismissal Procedures:

Please notify
the teacher in writing of any changes in any of these areas as they occur.

Lost and Found

We encourage
parents to label lunch boxes, jackets, and sweaters. If they are left behind at
school, please check the lost and found.

Money

All money
needs to be sent to school in an envelope or Zip-Lock bag. It needs to be
labeled, (lunch, field trip, etc.) and have the child’s name on it.

Toys

Toys or other
items should not be brought to school unless requested by the teacher.

Fire Drill

Exit room and
turn right, we will exit the door that is before the science lab.  Make sure that the door is closed and the
lights are turned off.    Exit the
building and line up quietly.  Students
should stay in a straight line and should not talk.  Take a roll count to make sure that you have
all students, if you are missing a student inform administration by completing
a “Missing Person” paper inside the red notebook.  Await the all clear signal to re-enter the
building. 

Tornado Drill 

Exit room and
have the students kneel down facing the wall to the right of our room.  Students should cover their heads with their
hands and remain quiet.  Take a roll
count to make sure that you have all students. 
Await for the all clear signal to re-enter classroom.

 

Earthquake Drill

Students use their desks for shelter in the case of an
earthquake.  Students sit under their
desks, bigger students and the teacher have designated tables to use for
shelter within the classroom. 

 

Intruder

Administrators alert the staff to the intrusion.  Teacher locks classroom door, shuts off the
lights, and ushers students into the restroom. 
Students assemble in the restroom with the door closed.  The teacher waits in the restroom with the
students or somewhere in the room where she cannot be seen in order to hear the
code word in case anyone (staff/student) needs in the classroom.  Administration will give an all-clear
announcement once the alert is over.

Presentation of Rules and Procedures

During the
first two weeks of school, all rules, consequences, reinforcements and
procedures will be discussed with students. Rules, reinforcements, and
consequences are posted in the classroom and will be reviewed as needed.

Parent Communication

Second Grade
supports the development of children as lifelong learners through partnerships
with each child’s home and family. Understanding that parent involvement is
important for a child’s success in school, we offer many opportunities for
parent communication:

Daily communication with parents takes place through notes,
conference/discipline forms filled out by the student and teacher, and phone
calls.

Weekly communication takes place in the form of a short newsletter
informing parents of upcoming events, changes in the schedule, and
homework.  I place phone calls or send
home postcards to notify parents of special things their child has done. Also
my school website is updated weekly.

There will be
at least one scheduled conference
between the child’s teacher and parents during the fall. All parents are
expected to attend these scheduled conferences. Parents are encouraged to
initiate conferences if they have questions by writing the child’s teacher or
setting up an appointment.

When teachers
observe the need for additional parent-teacher meetings, they will request that
parents come in for special conferences. If you wish a telephone conference, call the school and leave your number. The
teacher cannot be called to the telephone during the day.

The ESOL
teacher is available to translate during conferences and/or any written
correspondence between the parent and me.
