Well, I only say this to a person who has told me they do not believe in a deity. Otherwise I share that I am praying/have prayed/will pray.

What I mean when I say it is, “If it somehow helps your spirit, motivation, cheer and/or peace of mind to know that other people give a hoot about you and your situation, why, then, I don’t want to withhold expression of the support I genuinely feel.”

It is like clapping so Tinkerbell can live. I believe in you. I care. You and your problems are real. You are not alone.

(I don’t believe I’m sending tangible vibes. Not that I’m convinced others never do; I just think I would know it if it were happening.)

Now, if I have any reason to believe that the person would appreciate it if I pray, I prefer to do that. If it offends or distresses the person to have gods unknown to them petitioned on their behalf, then I don’t.
